Spring Gardening Tasklist

Spring is here and the ground is thawed! It’s time to start preparing and planting your flower beds. The days are here where there is bound to be a nice day warm enough for you to go out and give your flower beds the attention they deserve.

Here are 5 Steps to a Gorgeous Spring Garden.

CLEAN AND ORGANIZE YOUR FLOWER BEDS

Clear away dead leaves, weeds, and whatever else may have landed in your garden over the winter. Remove protective winter mulch from around the base of your plants and cut back last year’s dried foliage. You can also take this time to divide your perennials for a budget-friendly way to spread your flowers out across your garden.

Check out this article from the University of Minnesota on how and when to divide perennials.

ADD FRESH MULCH AROUND YOUR PERENNIALS

Now that you’ve thinned your perennials, add a layer of fresh mulch to your flower bed. Mulch helps the soil retain moisture, and it helps keep weeds down. If you are eyeballing the amount of mulch needed, it’s always a good idea to buy a bit more mulch than you think you’ll need. You can also use our handy calculator here to determine how much mulch to buy.

PRUNE TREES AND SHRUBS

Now that your flowerbeds are prepped for the season, it’s time to spend some time trimming your trees and shrubs. If you have fruit trees, now is a good time to trim them. It’s also the right time to trim your summer-blooming shrubs and trees.

PLANT VEGETABLES

With your garden whipped into shape, now is a great time to plant vegetables like hardy, cool-season vegetables like lettuce, carrots, and cauliflower. The best time to plant vegetables like these is early in spring, right after the ground thaws.

PLANT NEW PERENNIALS, NEW TREES, AND SHRUBS

New perennials need some time to grow new roots, so the best time to plant them is in early spring before the hot weather hits. Early spring is also the best time to plant new trees and shrubs, again, so they can take root before the summer months get here.

Once you’ve finished planting, add a layer of mulch before the weeds come up. This will reduce the need to weed in the summer months.
