3 Early Springtime Mulching Tips from the Experts

Spring is upon us and if you’re looking, you can already see the first signs of it here in Oklahoma. Annuals are beginning to sprout even though the ground is still cold and we are still seeing freezing temperatures in the OKC Metro area. This means it’s almost time to prepare your garden and landscaping for the season.

Here are 3 of our best Springtime mulching tips to help you make a game plan for your seasonal garden prep.

WAIT UNTIL THE GROUND WARMS UP

Presently, it is probably too cold to mulch. Let the soil warm up and dry out first. Mulching too soon can trap the cold into your moisture and this will have the opposite effect that you are looking for. Mulching too soon can delay your sprouts and prevent soil from drying out properly, causing rot.

EXPLORE YOUR GARDEN

It has probably been a few months since you’ve tended to your garden. Go out and explore your garden! You may not remember exactly where everything was planted last season so getting a visual or even written list together of each plant and what supplies you may need is a great idea. This helps make sure that you don’t miss a patch in your garden and it will prevent you from damaging your plants accidentally.

FLUFF YOUR MULCH

After you’ve refreshed yourself and have the lay of the land, use a hand tool to gently fluff your existing mulch while determining if you even need to lay more mulch down in that particular area. Take care to avoid damaging young plants, bulbs, and damaging roots. Tightly compacted mulch is not beneficial to your garden. Aerating the soil by fluffing the mulch promotes air and water circulation and helps keep your soil and mulch healthy and conducive to a healthy environment for your plants and flowers.

Once the ground and soil warm up you’ll be ready to lay your mulch and you’ll know exactly how much you need and where you need it.
