How to Install a Pole-to-Pole Clothesline in 5 Easy Steps

If you have extra concrete leftover from your last home improvement project, adding a clothesline on your property is a great choice. Not only does a clothesline come in handy for multiple uses, it also helps you cut energy costs by providing the perfect space to dry your clothes. There is nothing like line-fresh linens and if you have extra concrete, it’s the perfect way to use it up so it doesn’t go to waste.

Read to the end to find out how to install a pole-to-pole clothesline in 5 easy steps.

1. CHOOSE A LOCATION FOR YOUR CLOTHESLINE

Buy two ready-made clothesline poles. When choosing a location for the poles, make sure you are placing them away from trees, utility wires and poles, and any place where birds are known to perch. Choose a place that is low-traffic, away from where children and pets play and roam. You may also want to choose a place that is hard to see from the street for privacy.

2. DIG HOLES

Map out how much space you want between your poles and mark it with chalk or spray paint. Make them far enough apart to hold most of your laundry but keep in mind that too much space can cause the line to sag and not be able to hold up the weight of wet clothing.

Make sure to check with the local utility companies before you dig to make sure that you don’t interrupt any service lines.

Use a post-hole digger and dig two holes, one for each pole. You’ll want each hole to be 12-18 inches deep and 12 inches wide.

In the end, you’ll want your clothesline to be at the average height of a person or a couple of inches taller to make it easy to hang clothes on.

3. PLANT THE POSTS

Fill one-third of each hole with concrete mix, add water, and place each pole into its hole. Fill the hole the rest of the way up with concrete. Use a level to make sure your pole is straight and then stake your pole in place with rope or heavy string.

Let the concrete sit for a day and then remove the stakes and rope.

4. STRING YOUR CLOTHESLINE

Use a good-quality nylon clothesline to tie each end to the clothesline poles.

5. HANG YOUR CLOTHES

Hang your clothes using clothespins and enjoy the energy and environment-saving benefits of your new clothesline!
